Sage Szkabarnicki-Stuart, GloFish®️ Gymnocorymbus ternetzi, 2020
GloFish®️ are aquarium fish that have been genetically modified to fluoresce (glow). A gene extracted from jellyfish is used to make the fish glow bright green. GloFish®️ also come in other colors, depending on what genes have been added: a red glow comes from a gene found in sea coral, an orange glow is derived from a different variant of the jellyfish gene. They are the first genetically modified organism to be sold as pets. The introduction of GloFish®️ into the US market in 2003 was met with protests and some controversy. Activists believe they set a dangerous precedent for an unnecessary exploitation of GMOs for profit.
